Cloud Backup Market Growth, Technological Development and Forecast Report till 2024

Hey guys,

So iv got a DS1515+ synology with 6gb of ram. Should be plenty of memory and computer power.. However, I am having horribly slow upload speeds even though we have a fat connection. Dedupelication is very slow, and uploads are very slow.

What Im trying to do:

Trying to change the Dedupe settings either to minimal or set my own value. Found this on reddit:

"Find your my.service.xml file and find these lines:"

<dataDeDupAutoMaxFileSizeForWan>1</dataDeDupAutoMaxFileSizeForWan> <dataDeDuplication>MINIMAL</dataDeDuplication> <dataDeDupAutoMaxFileSize>1</dataDeDupAutoMaxFileSize>

The Problem:The folders/directories for the Crashplan container do not seem to exist, and therefore, I cannot reach the my.service.xml file to alter dedupe values.

What Ive Done:Ive read many many discussions on where to find the my.service.xml file. Iv read many of the support articles at support.code42.com. Iv read many of the issue discussions reported on Jlesages Github for crashplan.

I SSH in as admin, and apparently Synology DSM 6.0+ software have removed the ability to directly login as root.

So after loggin in as admin, you have to ‘sudo -I’ which will then ask for creds. Enter in your ‘admin’ account password and you are given root.

I have SSH’d into the Synology, and looked around for the folder that contain the config files for Crashplan… have not been able to find any. In fact, I can find a few different Docker folders, but none with crashplan. Yet --- the crashplan container is up and running, and I can access the GUI, as well as see the container running within the Docker app on the Synology.

I have tried to find the crashplan config files in the following directories without luck:

/var/packages/CrashPlan/target/conf

/CrashPlan (--- folder does not exist )

/Appdata/CrashPlan (--- folder does not exist in)

/docker/CrashPlan (-- folder does not exist)

/volume1/docker/AppData/CrashPlan

Folders that do exist:

/volume1/docker

/volume1/@docker (can cd into directory, but Permission denied to ls, even as root)

How do I find the correct config file to change Deduplication settings?

"Dear Valued Customer,

On May 6, 2019, our technical services team rolled out a number of changes to the CrashPlan for Small Business data protection service. These changes were intended to make restoring files and machines more efficient by eliminating unnecessary files from your backup sets. Unfortunately, we made two mistakes during this change process.

The first mistake relates to our email notifications sent to you regarding the changes to CrashPlan. Our initial email sent in early April was classified incorrectly as a marketing communication and did not reach customers who opted out of marketing communications. We resent the notification to all customers on May 17, but this did not give enough advance notice to some of our customers. We apologize for this mistake and we can assure you that we have since changed our processes to ensure better communications in the future.

The second mistake involves the actual file changes that we made. As part of this update, we stopped archiving 32 file types and directories. The email notification included a link to an updated list of files that are excluded from CrashPlan backups. One of the file types we began excluding from backups is the .sparseimage file format. We believed that this file format was obsolete because in 2007 Apple introduced a new format called .sparsebundle, which we thought replaced .sparseimage for the use case we track. After we implemented the changes in May, some of our customers made it clear they still have valid use cases for .sparseimage. We now believe we made an error in excluding .sparseimage, and we have since added it back to the list of files we support via backup.

If you use .sparseimage files, there is no action you need to take. The change will automatically be pushed to your client and .sparseimage files will once again be backed up in CrashPlan. This process will take several days as these devices connect to our service. You can see a full list of excluded files here.

We regret the inconveniences that these two mistakes may have caused you. Our priority is to provide a great product that protects your important small business data. We appreciate your feedback and ongoing partnership. Should you have any questions or need assistance, please contact our Support Team.

Thank you for your support and trusting us with your most important information.

Sincerely,

Joe Payne
President and CEO
Code42"

I had valid use cases for all my files, but hey, what do I know....

Received this, this morning...
/u/Nick_W1https://www.reddit.com/user/Nick_W1

I just received this e-mail from Crashplan (I have the small business plan - $20/mo per device)

We have always recommended you not include applications or other large files in your selection, In the past, we have allowed these files to be backed up despite this recommendation, however, in May 2019 we made some changes to our file exclusions and are now disallowing the backup of application directories, VM image files, and some backup file types.

You will likely see your file selection and backup archive size go down and benefit from faster restores, syncs, and backups. The new excludes are listed below and a full list of excludes can be found here.

New excludes for Application directories and new file types we are excluding: Applications: /Users/<username>/Applications, /Applications/, /Program Files/, /Program Files (x86)/ VM image files: .hdd, .hds, .pvm, .pvs, .vdi, .vfd, .vhd, .vmc, .vmdk, .vmem, .vmsd, .vmsn, .vmss, .vmtm, .vmwarevm, .vmx, .vmxf, .vsv, .nvram, .vud, .xva Backup files: .bck, .bkf Other files: .tmp, .part, .rbf, .tib, .sparseimage

So if I’m running VM’s the only way to back them up is from within the VM, while they are running, at a cost of $20/mo each - whether they back up data or not, whether they are running or not.

This is Crashplan’s Small Business plan (“unlimited” my ass).

Does anyone else think this is outrageous?

What’s the point of a backup service that won’t back up your files? Wherever or whatever they are.

Apparently the "exclusions" list for Crashplan got changed recently.

https://support.code42.com/CrashPlan/6/Troubleshooting/What_is_not_backing_up

I didn't know it was changing.

I had 15 servers backed up using Crashplan for about 2 years.

The data was in a sub folder of "Program Data" - because that's the way this particular app has been storing it's data by default since the 90s... Hasn't been a problem for 20 years.

I checked my backups recently, just because.

Everything I've backed up for my 15 clients for the last 2 years is gone. Not only did it just plain stop backing up current data, it also deleted my entire history : I can't restore anything either.

No notifications, no alerts, never got an email, no warnings beforehand, no alerts that all by backups sets were now 0 bytes in size. And I can't change it.

I sent a support request, they deemed it to be of "moderate" priority. Apparently deleting a customers entire backup history is only moderate priority. I'd hate to know what is high priority at Crashplan, perhaps they killed someone's cat?

This is the company that has on its home page "Automatic Data Loss Protection for Your Small Business" and "Never worry about losing business-critical data again." They deleted my business critical data. On purpose.

They deserve to go broke for doing this sort of thing in my opinion. People should be leaving in droves.

Turns out you CANNOT rely on Crashplan to backup your data.

If you are using CrashPlanPro to backup your PMS, Plex Media Server folder is now included on the excluded list starting 5/6/2019:

"(?i).*/Plex Media Server/.*"

This includes new and existing files. Other files of interest:

(?i).*\.hdd (?i).*\.hds (?i).*\.ost (?i).*\.part (?i).*\.sparseimage (?i).*\.vdi (?i).*\.vfd (?i).*\.vhd (?i).*\.vhdx (?i).*\.vmc (?i).*\.vmdk

> Not sure which motherboard, but it's dual socket, only one CPU populated (will check later)

> 16gb memory

> no Hardrives, caddies, or blanks included

> Includes inner rails, no outer rails.

This is a CODE42 branded chassis which I believe it is the CrashPlan appliance / code42 offering for medium sized business DLP. I'm unsure if an appliance such as this has a locked bios or any "proprietary" settings.

I was fine with Crashplan moving to a business-focused model, but now they've added a bunch of mandatory admin excludes that are completely unreasonable for a backup service. These will be enabled on 2019-05-06.

The big ones are removing: lightroom, disk images (.vhd, .sparse, etc), plex. It's quit brutal and seems to be focused on home user usage (even though it's supposed to be a business-level offering). Especially as I have encrypted disk images for storing critically sensitive documents on their service. Anyways, I'm done with their shit.

I've looked through the sidebar and found this thread: https://pay.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/1sqa44/best_unlimited_online_storage/ which is 5 years old. So I'm looking at updated recommendations to implement in the next month.

I'm open to anything, hard requirements:

  • Encrypted storage (I generate/control the key)
  • Unlimited backup space, no file restrictions (Costs are not a deciding factor)
  • 3OS support (linux, win, mac)
  • Prefer to run in a docker container

Currently, I'm investigating this thread: https://old.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/98naft/how_i_moved_away_from_crashplan/

Do you folks have any new/updated recommendations?

Edit: removed /etc, misread this on site

CrashPlan is about to forcibly exclude a whole pile of filetypes from backups.

In my view, this means they are no longer able to do proper offsite backups, because you can't guarantee what you try to backup is what they actually backup - or to put that another way, if your backup contains one of the many files they are planning to exclude, when you restore it, it's going to be missing those files, so it's not a real backup.

https://support.code42.com/CrashPlan/6/Troubleshooting/What_is_not_backing_up#section_11

If this affects you, please log a ticket with CrashPlan. Perhaps if enough people do they'll reconsider, though it's not seeming likely.

Just a quick reminder for those (few) of you (inc. me until a couple of months ago) that CrashPlan will start rejecting a bunch of system files, VM images, and more from your backups, starting May 2nd.

More info here: https://support.code42.com/CrashPlan/6/Troubleshooting/What_is_not_backing_up

The following excludes are planned to apply on or after May 2, 2019 (affects new and existing devices).

This wording makes it ambiguous if they'll remove those files from existing backups (it will for sure from new backups from existing devices).

Regardless, it will for sure affect any homelabbers (still) using the service.

I've searched for the answer, and most results point back to this announcement saying they're ending support for windows server OSs. However, that announcement states it only applies to "code42 for enterprise" and not "crashplan for small business".

Can anybody definitively state whether or not crashplan for small business works on Windows server 2012R2?

Intellectual Property (IP) is often the most important asset that a company has, because development of innovative solutions is the most efficient way for companies to compete in an all-tech world. Unlike patents, which can secure the right of exclusivity in exchange for public disclosure, IP includes trade secrets and know-how that the owner cannot disclose and that require particularly rigorous protection.

Unfortunately, some employees who have access to IP might have a lax attitude to its security. According to a study based on a feedback of 1,700 business leaders from the U.K., the U.S., and Germany, 72% of CEOs confessed that they have taken IP from a previous employer. This is backed by Netwrix’s 2018 IT Risks Report, which found that 39% of companies consider departing and terminated employees to be the biggest risk to their IP. If a company has not detected an insider in time, the individual can take stolen data to a competitor. It is hard to prevent IP theft, because all employees who come into contact with confidential data may be complicit in this. Here are a few simple tips that can help organizations mitigate against this risk.

Step 1. Know where your confidential data resides and who has access to it

Today, many companies store IP in the cloud or spread it across multiple systems and applications. Examples of such confidential information can include source code, formulations, methods and processes. In addition, users often copy data to their personal devices when working remotely on their laptops, which makes it very hard to eliminate the risk of a data breach.

To be able to protect such information assets, a company needs to determine which sensitive data it holds and classify it from the least to the most sensitive. When this step is completed, it is necessary to identify all users, contractors and partners who have access to it, and define potential points of compromise. For example, if an employee has access to company’s information on new product development, then they belong to a high-risk group.

Step 2. Establish data security policies for the entire organization

A vital step to protecting a company’s IP is to ensure that sensitive information is available only to authorised personnel, whose access is strictly limited on a need-to-know basis. Just as in the example above, access rights to the files with data on new product development should be limited only to the employees who are involved in research and development. It is also necessary to update access rights regularly and to deactivate operationally all user accounts on an employee’s last day. Another important step is to ensure that all employees who work with IP are informed about security policies and the penalties for ignoring them.

Step 3. Control that all users adhere to policies

In real life, employees are susceptible to forgetting or ignoring security policies Research by Kaspersky Labfound that only 12% of employees are aware of their organization’s IT security policies. This refers to companies of all sizes: even enterprises cannot say their IP is 100% protected from the insider threat. For example, U.S. authorities recently arrested a former Apple employee when he was about to fly to China with confidential information relating to Apple’s self-driving car project.

Therefore, organizations should put all possible efforts into ensuring the enforcement of security policies. In particular, it is necessary to implement specific methods for user behaviour monitoring and tracking unauthorized or unnecessary access attempts. These methods should enable IT security professionals to intervene if required to terminate a suspicious session.

Some examples of signs that someone is trying to violate the security policy and steal IP are:

  1. Spikes in activity. For example, if someone has copied a large amount of sensitive data, the cyber security team should receive an alert about this incident and investigate it straight away
  2. Activity outside of business hours
  3. Anomalous VPN access

Step 4. Involve CEO in the establishment of the cyber security culture

To eliminate the risk of rogue employees stealing IP and disrupting operations, a Head of Information Security Department should collaborate with a CEO to develop a cyber security strategy. The CEO should set goals for the management team and the HR department to raise cyber security awareness within the entire organization.

This goal should include certain specified tasks. The role of management teams is to ensure that their subordinates follow the security policies. The role of HR is to conduct cyber security training for employees to remind them how to deal with the confidential data and to encourage people to report on incidents. HR should also establish a set of rules when hiring. This includes asking specific questions during job interview to discover an individual’s attitude towards ethics. It is advisable to require employees to self-certify that they have read and understood the organization’s security policies – whether relating to IP or other data assets – and to ensure that this process is conducted annually.

Each company should have a strategy for mitigating insider threats to its IP, as each company has individual points of data compromise and faces specific threat actors. It is impossible to outsource the solution of this problem. There is no any external algorithm to a company’s security policy to minimize this risk. Senior management should collaborate with cyber security managers to identify the most efficient strategy that both protects data and systems and is in line with the business’s processes.

Hello, when I try to run Plan-C to recover the key from Crashplan ADB it gives me following error. I placed contents of ADB into plan-c folder

root@osboxes:/home/osboxes/Desktop/test/plan-c-linux64# ./plan-c --adb . recover-key Failed to open ADB (.) to recover your decryption key: Invalid argument: leveldb.BytewiseComparator does not match existing comparator : code42.archive.v2.virtual.table You may need to run 'sudo ./plan-c recover-key' to have enough permission to read that directory, then pass the recovered key to the --key option. Also check that the Crashplan service is not running (it holds a lock on ADB), try one of these: macOS - sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.crashplan.engine.plist Windows - net stop CrashPlanService Linux - sudo service crashplan stop Other - https://support.code42.com/CrashPlan/4/Troubleshooting/Stop_and_start_the_Code42_app_service root@osboxes:/home/osboxes/Desktop/test/plan-c-linux64#

I checked folder permissions, they allow all. Does anybody have ideas what might be causing this?

Greetings, I've been having a lot of pain trying to get crashplan in docker to backup all my files. However, it's weird now in that it is backing up some files, but not all of them. In particular, there is one shared directory I've mounted in there that has read/write permissions for the wgant and admin users and the admin group. That one backs up and I can see the files within, from within the crashplan interface. I ended up finally giving everyone read permissions to everything I wanted backed up and lo and behold, it appears to see the files now. However, it's giving me some error now about exceeding inotify's max watch limit. I looked into their docs on it and it suggests editing some files. This sounds reasonable, except for the fact that it's running in a docker container that I have to nuke and pave every time they update. This seems like an issue that is going to be a recurring maintenance point.

Here's their knowledge base bit. https://support.code42.com/CrashPlan/4/Troubleshooting/Linux_real-time_file_watching_errors

Is there some other tool that works well on synology that the community would suggest? I'm ok with it being in docker, as long as it isn't something that is randomly going to start silently failing (like crashplan did a month ago). I did research backups before I got this machine, but at the time, it looked like Crashplan was going to work just fine in a docker container, which I now know to not exactly be the case.

Or is there some way to edit this on the host, such that it will continue to work properly on the docker containers I have out there?

Sorry for the dumb questions. I'm middling at best as a linux admin, and still crawling up the learning curve on docker.

Hello, I'm using CrashPlan free on couple of computers (locally and p2p).

Crash/lan reminds us repeatedly in mails:

This is a reminder that after October 22, 2018, the free version of CrashPlan for Home will no longer work. This means that any data that you previously backed up using the free version will be inaccessible and you will not be able to back up or restore files, even to local folders or friends’ computers.

But how do you think they do it technically?

  • Will they only shut down their servers, so user will not be able to log in on new computers and start new backup to friends computers?
  • Or they will force log out/deauthorize to all clients, thus practically sabotaging all users?

I think this is interesting question, because CrashPlan client in capable working offline for years.

One of my CrashPlan is on computer with limited internet connectivity by firewall. And for the last 3 years is backup go online over another CrashPlan computer. Only allowed IP is IP of remote computer. (allow access to CrashPlan server was only required for initial setup)

So I thing that people using CrashPlan locally are theoretically good to go after October 22 if they block CrashPlan access to internet and they do backup of "C:\ProgramData\CrashPlan" folder.

PS: I do not recommend this approach as reasonable, but just as a way to get more time.

What do you think?
