Hi everyone,

we are back from our second trip to Japan and had a lovely time there in december. It was a more laid back typ of holidays, so we just stayed in Tokyo this time and just had one hotel.

First of all a few words about us:

This is our third trip to Asia in 2018 (Laos, Korea and now Japan) and our secound trip to Japan (last one in 2016 check my other post ...)

My gf and I are both 28 and are living in Germany. I am lao and she is german-russian and we are both very interested in the asian culture (Gaming, Anime, Mangas, ...).

Pictures

Pictures are taken with Canon EOS 550D / 24mm pancake lense and Moto G6 Plus.

https://imgur.com/a/9jbVlAR

Preperation

As always we have an Excel for our to-dos, but this time the list was much shorter, since we had already did the "sightseeing stuff". But we had a lot of things left from our last trip and a lot of places to eat.

I recommend to google around and google for itineraries.

I save all the places to visit in Google maps.

www.japan-guide.com got everything you need.

Things we looked forward

  • Wagyu A5

  • Winter Illumination

  • Odaiba (+Firework)

  • Digital Art Museum

  • Pablo Pancake

Apps

I would recommend to download the following apps:

  • Google Maps
  • Tokyo Subway Navigation
  • Maps.Me (offline Map avaible)
  • Google Translate

Stay

We booked our hotel through booking.com and stayed near Tokyo Station (10 min walk) and between Kanda and Otemashi Station (5 min walk each).

It is a pretty standard hotel. Everything was clean, the breakfast was good and the the staff friendly.

We wanted to stay near Tokyo station, since we planned two 1-day-trips and wanted to be near the Kansai Bus Express to Narita.

  • 110€ per night/room incl. breakfast
  • Near a two subway station
  • Breakfast was good (Western + Japanese style)
  • Would recommend

https://www.booking.com/hotel/jp/villa-fontaine-otemachi.de.html?

Expenses

I wrote down all our expenses in an Excel (every single Yen). We got very cheap direct flights from Brüssel, which is 400km from my parents home.

Expenses are for both of us. (e.g. 400 for the flight per person)

--- in €
Flight 800
Stay 1200
Transportations 130
Eating out 450
Shopping 170
Sightseeing 70
Total 2820

Flight

We didn't plan to go to Japan, but we found this very cheap direct flight with ANA and went with it. The staff is very friendly and the food is good too. One of the better airlines I went with in the last years.

I also forgot my glasses+case at the boarding gate on our way back and they sent it to germany in the next few days.

I can fully recommend this airline and would take ANA over other airlines.

Transportation

For Tokyo you can buy a 3-day Tokyo Subway ticket, which is valid for both Subway lines (Tokyo, Toei; NOT Odaiba). You can buy it at train stations or different shops. You have to show your passport. https://www.tokyometro.jp/en/ticket/travel/index.html

For our 1-day-trips we bought our tickets at the ticket-machine. You can set the language to english and just have to enter you destination.

Itinerary

Things marked with * are highly recommended.

Day 1:

  • Arrival Narita at 16:00
  • Kansai Bus to Tokyo
    • 1000 Yen per Person
    • 1h to Tokyo
  • Lawson
  • Check In

Our first day was pretty straight forward. Buy the Tokyo 3-day Ticket at the airport. Get to Tokyo with the bus, grab something to eat, check-in and try to sleep. The bus was pretty nice. You are in Tokyo in an hour and it has wifi. On our way to the hotel we grabbed some food from Lawson: - Eggsandwich* - Nissin Big Ufo
- Strong Zero - Meny Musashi Ramen - Cheese Chicken - Melonpan

I would recommend everybody to have some meals from the supermarkets, since they are very delicious and cheap. A few items tastes even better than in some restaurants.

Day2:

We forgot the bring our AC-adapter with us, so we went out to buy two at Biccamera. After that we went to Odaiba to go to the Digital Arts Museum. This was one of our highlights of the trip. The rooms very astounishing, I have never seen anything like that. Just take a look at the website. Every Saturday night in December there is a firework near the Rainbowbridge. Since we already were in Odaibe, we walked along Odaiba, took some photos and ate in the mall unitel 7. Some photographs were waiting for hours to have the best spot. The firework was beautiful even though the weather was very windy and it was freezing cold. On our way home we grabbed some food at Family Mart. Getting something to snack at the hotel is one of our "tradition".

Day 3:

We were very jetlagged and couldn't really sleep and overslept the breakfast. Since this was a "laid back" trip, we didn't do that much that day. We went to Asakusa ate some sweets and the our favorite Melonpan. Melonpan tastes similiar to a cakecrumbs and this bakery has one of the best ones. As a rule of thumb: every shop which has a line for over 10min has delicious food. After that we walked to the Sky Tree to take some photos and did shopping in Akihabara. After a break we went to the TMGT and took some photos. On our way back we grabbed some snacks as always.

Day 4:

We did a little trip to Gotokuyi to go to the Maneki-neko Temple. It was a very little lovely town and the temple was small, but there were so many nekos. It was a nice little trip. After that we went to Korea town since we craved some Dakgalbi since our trip to Korea last summer. In Shin Okubo were so many people, way too much for us, so we just walked around a little, got our Dakgalbi and went to Shinjuki. One of our goals were to try Bake Cheescake and compare it to Pablo Cheesecake since a lot of people said Bake would be better. For us it was not, it wasn't bad but Pablo is just soo good.

Day 5:

It was my gf birthday so we went to here favorite Yakiniku place and ate some meat. For her birthday we went to Park Hyatt and enjoyed the Twilight time. It is a 3h all you can drink + canape for about 60€ per person. You can order some drinks like beer, wine, sparkling wine, whiskey, wodka, gin, rum, tequila and everything you could mix with the alcohol like Tequila sunrise or Mojito. I orderd different whiskeys on the rocks for me and my gf order Berry Mojito. For canapes you got snacks or little plates with chicken, shrimp, spring rolls and so one which you could get yourself. Could there be something more beautiful than having a drink with your loved one on the 41th floor with a view of Tokyo.

Day 6:

  • Yokohama
  • Cosmo World
  • World Porters
  • Red Brick Warehouses
  • Piers
  • Osanbashi Pier
  • Yashimita Park
  • China Town
  • Machinro Honten http://www.manchinro.com/
  • 711

This was our first daytrip to Yokohama. The train ticket process was straight forward: set to english, choose Yokohama, buy and google for you train. It took about 30 minutes to Yokohama. In Yokohama you can make a roundtrip and end up at the station again. We walked by the Cosmo World, Cup Noodle Museum. the Piers to take some pictures, the Red Brick Warehouses - where you can take excellent photoshoots - Osanbashi Pier and took a break at Yamashita Park to eat something. At the Red Brick Warehouses was a little nice Christmas Market, but the prices are like 4x the prices in Germany (11$ for Hot wine or Sausages). In Chinatown we bought some Dumplings and Meat Buns for lunch. It was a small booth from Machinro and quite delicious, but not a must have in my opinion. After that we windowshopped in World Porters and waited for dawn to take some pictures at night. After that we went back to Tokyo, grabbed something at 711 like always and called it a day. Yokohama is a very peacfull place and really nice to take a break from busy Tokyo.

Day 7:

  • Ginza
  • Matsukoshi Ginza
  • Meiji Park
  • Shibuya
  • Shibuya Crossing
  • Hachiko
  • Shibuya 109
  • Doutor
  • Yakiniku A5*

We were quite tired and still jetlagged so we decided to have a lazy day. We went to Ginza to try some sandwiches we saw on youtube and they were really good. We bought an eggsandwich and a fruitsandwich for about 300 Yen each. They are half the size than the one from the supermarket but worth a try, because they are way more delicious, especially the fruitsandwich. We walked around Meiji Park a bit and did some shopping in Shibuya 109. We decided to eat Wagyu for dinner, so we tried to make a reservation at Ginza Steak, but is was fully booked for the rest of the year. So we just went to Doutor Cafe and had some hot drinks and waited for dinnertime and tried to get a seat at Yakiniku A5. This is the best meat I every ate, better than dry aged or Hanwoo or anything else. We took the 90 minutes all you can eat and drinks al a card. It costs about 15.000 Yen for both. First you get a platter with different cuts (~200g), after you finish that you get a ~150g steak and after that you can order as much meat you want until you reach the 75 minute mark, but they will come and ask for your last order. The first cuts we tried were good, but not lifechangig. But then it hit us, I really don't know the cut, but maybe you can help me. It was so good, I orded it a few times, I couldn't stop to eat it. As side dish we had grilled garlic and Caesers Salad, which were also very good. As dessert we had icecream, whish was really pleasent after such a feast. I'm still undecided if I should order some A5 beef, but here it costs ~400€ per kg. I would fly to Japan just to eat this beauty again :D

Day 8:

  • Kamakura
  • Daibutsu
  • Hasedera
  • 711
  • Hokokuji
  • Zuisenji
  • Hachimangu Shrine
  • Kiji Okonomiyaki

Our second and last daytrip. This time the destination was Kamakura. Ticket purchase process was as easy as before. We took a walk to Daibutsu (30 min) instead the bus. The big budda was nice and worth a stop. Just a few minutes apart is Hasedera Temple. A nice, big tample complex where you can take beautiful pictures and can go upstairs and see the city from above. After a short lunch break with different buns at 711 we took the bus to Hokokuji. If you take the bus, have some coins ready. You pay when you get out. We didn't know that but a japanese women tried to explain that with hands and foots. Hokkokuji temple has a bamboo garden and some houses, the garden was nice the rest as everywhere else. We had a little time and went to Zuisenji Temple which wasn't anything special. On our way to the station we went to Hachimangu shrine. It's a little uphill, so you had a nice view from there. Also this was the only free temple. After arriving in back in Tokyo we went to Kiji to eat some Okonomiyaki. It was ok, but not as good as in Osaka or Hiroshima.

Day 9:

  • Menya Musashi Ramen*
  • Harajuku
  • Daiso
  • Akihabara
  • Pable Mini*
  • Donki
  • Blue Cave Illumination Shibuya
  • Ebisu Garden Place
  • Nakiriyu Ramen 711
  • Tsuta Ramen 711

Our last days in Tokyo and still so much to do. We didn't had Ramen yet, so we went to Menya Musashi. A very japanese local where you order at a vending machine and sit at the bar. We got Ramen and Dip Ramen. The broth of the Dip Ramen was fantastic. The pork chunks very so soft and delicious too. I would recommend the deep broth for everybody, who doesn't like a fishy taste brooth (which is the standard I think). We didn't bought anything yet so we went to Daiso in Harajuku and Donki in Akiba. In the evening we went to the Blue Cave Illumination in Shibuya first and then to Ebisu. The illumination in Shibuya was very beautiful, an avenue of blue trees and a fully crowded avenue. Ebisu was also very nice. There was a 5x3 meter Crystal Chandelier and a little Christmas Market. At the hotel we made some ramen: Nakiriyu and Tsuta instant ramen which you can get at 711. Both are well recognised ramen restaurants. I have to admit, both of them are so good, way better than expected and better than almost every Ramen we ate. For ~300 Yen each I would eat rather this than go out and eat at a random place. This is a must try.

Day 10:

  • Genki Sushi
  • Shibuya
  • Donki
  • Melonpan Asakusa Kagetsudo
  • Shabu Shabu Nabezo

Last day in Tokyo and we hadn't have Sushi too. We went to Genki, since we wanted to try the iPad, automatic lanes Sushi ones. It wasn't good I would say, more like standard but an experience. It was also full of tourists, which should be a sign for us. We aren't that much of sushi lovers, so it was ok for us. A little bit more shopping and another Melonpan at Kagetusdo (it's so good) and it was already time for Christmas Eve dinner. We went to Nabezo and had the standard menue with 2 brooths (7.500 Yen for both). We had the Shabu Shabu and Sukiyaki brooth. You get 4 different cuts of meat (2 pork and 2 beef) and can order as many more as you want. Additionally there was a buffet with salad, mushrooms, tofu, ... and the non alcoholic drinks were for free too (and icecream too). Everything was very delicious and I don't know how much better the other options could be (japanese pork and beef for almost double the price). After this meal it was time to pack and get ready to go home

Day 11: * Bus to Narita * Narita * Flight back home

Breakfast, walk to the bus. We did some shopping at the airport: some gifts and Tokyo Banana. The plane was half empty, so we had enough room to lie down and get some rest. Back in Germany I was looking for my glasses. I forgot them at the gate... I called Narita Airport and they had them. I had to sign something and they send them to Germany where I could pick them up. Nothing was missing, not even the 800 Yen inside my glasses-etui and it cost nothing. Very friendly and nice from ANA and a big thanks again.

Conclusion

Tokyo in December is as pleasant as in summer. Maybe even mor wonderful, because of the illumination. It is not as crowded and you can still take some walks without freezing. A big plus are the flight prices in December, it is way cheaper.

*What I really liked this time

  • Teamlab Light Museum
  • Wagyu A5
  • Winter Illumination
  • Instant Ramen Nakiriyu and Tsuta
  • Pablo Mini Cheesecake

Other things

We are going to Tokyo again for 2 weeks this december and or open for some suggestions :)

Hi to all,I need some help to build a sound diffuser that adds harmonics to the sound coming from my instrument.I took inspiration from an instrument called Crystal Baschet made by the Baschet Brothers in the '70s.I attached some images to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

The metallic object is what I would try to build:

I want to ask you to give me some help to choose the metal that I'm gonna use and if is possible make me understand how the acoustics works in these situations for example how the shape and the material affects the sound.

The diffuser I'll position it close to the bridge of my string instrument:

P.s. sorry for my bad english ! :D

residence:5 days, want to hit all the main sites. will be living/based out of tofukuji station. USA->taipei->Kyoto->USA

Buget: most things have already been budgeted, not too worried, anything that isn't too expensive is fine.

Also, is there a way on the english language version of opentabel to bookmark restaurants and see them on a map like on Yelp? I also don't see any reservation system in opentabel, japanese or english website versions?

American Going Oct 2-7 from Taiwan

Kinkakuji

Osaka- dotonburi , a nice restaurant too going to start reserving today

Did I miss any big sites? Any experiences or tours worth paying for not here? Any things other than restaurants I could save a lot of time/effort paying ahead of time? In my research transportation I can usuallydo the day of. I ownder if some of these sites have long quues just to get tickets? I have one airbnb tea sitting scheduled in Kyoto. Osaka will probably just be the castle. i like a light nature trek in the city, a garden, museums. Not into alcohol/nightlife as much as others.

For restaurants cannot do pork. I have already looked up halal resetuarnst in the area, there are plenty im looking forward too including uyghur food!

Lastly for michelin starred restaurants do they have a dress code? i will be traveling, and i travel light, rather not have to bring a suite or sports coat...i usually fly carry on only

I like to smell good, arabian oils and fragrances, do the japanese at these high end restaurants, are they very particular about this? How about lighter/floral scents? They are small 3ml oils...hopefully wont cause a problem/delay in emigration either

Can someone look over my my itinerary? Kyoto and Osaka

Before I start, this was three years ago. My parents were redoing their honeymoon and the hotel they stayed at 20 years ago was the Summit Inn hotel in Pennsylvania. I was 13 at the time, so take everything here with a grain of salt I guess. I'm not trying to convince, as some of the things I'm going to say sound far fetched to me. I'm not really that in to ghosts and I'm only typing this because I know people in this sub are suckers for this type of stuff. Also I suck at righting coherent stories so sorry.

So first there are three main things that happened while I was at this place, I'll just go in order.

  1. So when I was staying here my parents managed to get the same room they got 20 years ago, my brother being sixteen and me being 13 we wanted our own room, so we got our own room. The day was normal, we got their late and checked in and just sat in bed. At around 11 or so my brother just told me that he read something online that this place was very haunted ( I'll get to that in a minute.) With me being young and all this obviously freaked me the hell out. Freaked me out so much that I ended up pulling an all-nighter that night. I stayed up and played Civ 5 and Terraria on my laptop, kinda on edge because I was always afraid of ghosts and stuff. Nothing really happened, I swore I heard noised like three times but that's probably because I was so uptight.. The real fun of this story is when everyone woke up in the morning. I got out of bed first because I was already up and our door was unlocked and open. I remember locking that shit up because I was scared the night before. I was up all night so I would have knew if someone got up. I also went to the bathroom halfway through the night and the door was still closed. This scared the hell out of me.
  2. It isn't a good hotel if it doesn't have a pool and maybe a small game room. Luckily the Summit Inn provided. To get to the pool you had to go down to the bottom floor, below the lobby, and walk past the game room and this giant, empty banquet room. I remember when I first went by this room it was so eerie and creepy. It was a pitch black room and it was cold down there. I just had the feeling something was in there watching me. But, I kept on going to the pool. Later I wanted to go to the game room so I went there. However, the game room just so happened to be right next to that creepy ass banquet room. So close in fact there was this giant double door connecting them, and of course just my luck they both had to be open. Even after three years later I vividly remember this feeling. I walked into that game room and I just had this horrible feeling. It was almost like anxiety, which is strange because I don't have any history of anxiety. It was horrible, I felt so off. I just sat there and stared into that room. It felt like some fucking presence was just watching me. I closed the doors, obviously, that shit was scary. At this time my brother had came up too, but this was after I closed those doors. While some of that feeling was gone I still had this strange feeling in that room even with my brother there with me. This next part scared the fuck out of me. There were arcade games all with tunes and jingles and sounds. I had been there a good ten minutes before this and nothing like this ever happened. One of the arcade machines had this low humming to it. Almost like a beep. It just kept getting louder, and it got loud fast. That shit almost had my ears ringing by the time it stopped, and when it did the whole room just was silent. My brother and I decided that we should just get the hell out of there, which we did
  3. This third thing could easily be disregarded. I mentioned my brother reading online how this place was very haunted. Well after that arcade room bullshit I looked up "Summit Inn Haunted Room" on google. I found a trip adviser review that you can read for yourself. This is what my brother scared me with. Creepy ass review that honestly sounds made up lol. But we decided to find room 119 anyways. We went to room 119 at like 11:30 and as soon as we got there we noticed it had a thing on the door that said a cleaner was in the room. I hadn't seen anything other sign on the doorknob like that one in the hotel, just on that room. Well, after about 15 seconds this loud alarm or bell was very easily heard from the lobby. I don't know why a hotel would have some weird ass alarm, but both my brother and I heard it so we dipped the fuck outta there.

BONUS: There was this creepy maid at the hotel. She was real old and shit. We asked her if the hotel was haunted and instantly she assured us that this place was very haunted. She also asked if we had seen him walking the halls. We didn't know what the hell she was talking about and she told us that you could see a man walking the halls at night. Sounds like some Hash slinging slasher shit to me. Could very easily be called off, probably just messing with us lol.

Well that's it. Let me know what you all think, I don't really believe in ghosts all that much. I personally think it's far fetched a little, but I knew some of you would like to hear this so I shared. Thanks for reading this mess lol.

Does anyone know of a way to find a tour guide for a town in Italy? I've been looking for quite a while, but apart from a few names, I haven't been able to find much information. Is there a website where travelers can connect with local guides?

I've posted in tripadvisor.com, and also tried using LinkedIn. Not much luck. Tried looking around Facebook -- nothing.

(Incidentally the area is a densely populated area called Cosenza in Calabria, Italy. Two of us are traveling October 19-26, 2019.)

Any info or tips at all would be appreciated!

Fraudulent Reviews for Booking.com Properties in Istanbul

I had a poor experience recently with a highly rated Istanbul property through Booking.com.

The property had a "Very Good" review score and was highly rated by most visitors. In reality the property was a dump and made me highly suspicious that the reviews were being manufactured to deceive.

My opinion was somewhat confirmed when I posted my honest but low scoring review of the property only to have the very next review award the property a perfect "10" yet with no comments on the experience (clearly this tactic keeps the properties average review score from plummeting).

A Perfect \"10\", eh?

Further substantiation of my opinion when I stumbled upon this thread:

https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293974-i368-k7983665-Fake_verified_reviews_at_Booking_com-Istanbul.html

I've opened a customer service case with Booking.com but after seeing the above (4 years ago!) I'm quite concerned that Booking.com is not taking this seriously.

I have to travel back through Istanbul at month end and am planning to cancel my booking previously made through Booking.com (different property) as the reviews for Istanbul simply can't be trusted.

Also reconsidering using Booking.com for any future bookings but this will depend on how/if this issue I'm raising with their customer service is addressed.

Please be careful out there!

***Additional information based on replies I received. I have been traveling full time for the majority of the last two years. I have booked 34 properties through Booking.com to date, and whether I book through them, or Agoda, or Airbnb I closely scrutinize the reviews. This appears to be a well organized network of illegitimate accounts that "stay" at poorly run/low quality properties then rate them highly which fraudulently inflates the properties review scores and successfully dupes travelers into lodging at the property. In addition to this tactic, they seem to also use a "bait and switch". I haven't completely figured out this component, but it is alluded to in the thread above and I'll add that the Istanbul property that I recently stayed at, and the property directly across the street both had the same name! So, not only are "verified" reviews being posted by unverified accounts, it seems the properties themselves are not being verified. FWIW, the intent here is to bring awareness to other travelers. I have cancelled my upcoming reservation with Booking.com in Istanbul, and am considering how/if to use them going forward. In fairness to them, I have generally been pleased with the platform, and even the handling of one issue I had (although n=1 is a small sample size), and indeed these fake reviews/abuse of the platform is a tough problem for them to uncover/address; still, if this has been ongoing for years Booking.com should be doing something by now. Thanks and be careful out there!***

My wife and I spent 6 days in Iceland in June. Below is a summary of our trip that I hope others will find helpful. For currency conversion purposes, 100KR is about $1.10 Cdn, or about 80 cents US$. So you can quickly convert something like 2000KR to $20 Cdn, then add 10% so about $22.

About us: Canadian, early 40s, semi experienced travelers, and experienced tent campers in a campground.

The Plan: We planned to rent a camper van, picking the van up in Reykjavik the day we flew in travel the ring road and sightsee, and returning the van the day we leave, 6 days later. The major sites on our list were the Golden Circle and doing the entire Ring Road. We planned in advance (but did not book in advance) the campgrounds we would stay at, and which sites we wanted to stop at along the way.

Map

Here is a map with where we stayed each night (the red dots) and a very rough trace of our route, see the itinerary below for the details. Please ignore the actual driving directions on the map, because this was a rough trace of our route, and the google map driving route tracing thing wasn't easy to use.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1kmPdhQIa5SUXSOrRLXWU58IxaHh55h4Y&usp=sharing

Camper Rental

We rented from Affordable Campers. The rental process was easy and straightforward ( we left a review on Tripadvisor if you want more details). They offered to pick us up anywhere in Reykjavik and once we returned the camper to the office after the trip, they also offered to drop us off anywhere in Reykjavik. The camper itself was great, and a huge step above tent camping. The bed was quite comfortable and only took 5 minutes at the most to set up each night. This consisted of moving our seats forward and folding down the remainder of the bed platform and the bed mattress, and clearing the bed. There was enough storage under the bed for our large suitcase and 2 pack backs and a few other random items such as souvenir bags and jackets, all of this was kept under the bed. There was also a storage bin or food and plates/utensils etc, and a fridge, which was a bit small but enough to cover the basics (Milk, cheese, eggs, mayo, but only 1 beer each :( Our van also came with a built in heater, which definitely came in handy. We decided to take the full insurance package, just to cover all our bases, although I believe you are still on the hook for a 1,000 EUR deductible, but check with your rental company.

We decided to stay in the camper each of our 5 nights, in a campground, we thought about doing a night either at the start or at the end of our trip in a hotel, but decided against it. The primary reason for doing the whole trip in a camper was to give our selves maximum flexibility, so we could spend as long or as little as we wanted in each destination. However, that being said, we did have a few tours booked so there were a few times when we needed to be in a certain area at a certain time (see below for details).

Campgrounds

As mentioned we stayed in campgrounds each night. Each camp ground we stayed at charged per person, which is different from Canada where I've only ever paid per site. They typically cost 1500-2000 KR per person per night. They were all well equipped with washrooms and all had showers as well, (some were pay showers) many had washers, but NO dryers. The no dryers is ok if you are staying there for a few days and the weather co-operates, but it was a bit of an issue for us since we only stayed in one spot each night. We were hoping to find a dryer, especially when we were in the east, just to dry our jackets, towels and pants, since it was a bit rainy for a day or two. A few of the camp grounds also had a leave/take area where you could either pick up or leave supplies for others, it is not something we took advantage of, (expect for leaving stuff on the last day). Also each campground had a nice sheltered cooking/eating area with a sink/dishwashing area. Another unique thing about the campgrounds was that only one of them had numbered sites, otherwise it was if your van fits there, you can camp there. I found the campgrounds to be very quiet as well, no loud campers/parties into the night. The biggest negative I can recall was that in one of the shelters someone was smoking inside the cooking/eating area, which really made my meal unpleasant, however there actually were no, no smoking signs, so I guess it might be something you might run into as well, luckily only the one time for us.

Food

We knew going that food was/is expensive. Our plan was to hit a grocery store (a Bonus as these are the cheapest according to our research) and stock up on the basics : Milk, eggs (6), cheese, bread, cold cuts, bananas, apples, tomatoes, cucumber, chips, chocolate bars, pasta ,pasta sauce). The cost for this was about 55 KR. The milk and eggs were a farily reasonable price like 300 KR, the bread was about 450KR. We also brought some supplies with us: coffee (although this seemed to be priced ok about 600 KR for a no name bag), Kraft Dinner, granola bars. We also planned on maybe 2 or 3 restaurant/take out meals, and of course coffees on the road. For example one of our restaurant means we had a 12" pizza that we shared for 2500 KR, and I had a beer to go with it for 1200 KR (about $14 Cdn for one glass of beer!!!!). I also had a Hamburger at another spot that ran about 2500 KR. I will also mention that for water, you can refill almost anywhere for drinking water, so need to buy bottles of water.

Tours/Museums/Blue Lagoon.

I recommend booking any tours in advance. We booked ours in March/April. A lava tube tour and a zodiac tour of Jokulsarlon Iceberg lagoon. I would highly recommend both of these tours, costs below. I would say there are very few places in the world that could offer these tours, so they are kind of unique to Iceland.

We went to 2 museums. A WW2 museum in Reyoarfjorour, which I really enjoyed, I recommend it to anyone who likes WW2 history. We also went to an old settlement/farm/sod houses at Glaumbaer farmstead at the Skagafjorour Museum, this was ok, I found it to be a bit pricey 1700 KR each, so not something I would call a must see, I'm sure there are other sod houses to see for cheaper. We also hit up the Lava Centre near Vik. This was also pricey, but I would say worth it, about 3000 KR each. They had many great hi tech volcano related displays, it was very well done.

The Blue Lagoon

I went in with very low expectations for the Blue lagoon (in fact I didn't really want to go...more below) and my wife had high expectations. It turns out that my wife was the one that was disappointed, not saying I loved the place, but... I went in expecting for it to be a packed like sardines kind of place with drunken people everywhere and me on the verge of suffering 1st degree burns from the hot lagoon water. It actually wasn't that packed when we got there about 11:00 and we planned to spend about an hour in the water, leave yourself time to get changed before and after (go early AM or late PM avoid the afternoon rush!!). Speaking of the water, I found it mostly ok, not too hot, definitely some very hot spots where the water comes into the pool, but quite tolerable, so that was nice. This of course, greatly disappointed my wife who was looking forward to cooking off the first layer of her skin. The other reason I didn't really want to do the blue lagoon was because we basically had to sacrifice our entire last day in order to fit it in our schedule. So my take on this is that it is skippable, I would only recommend going to those to want to go to the actualy blue lagoon.

Itinerary

I didn't put every stop (or every waterfall...there were a ton of them). If anyone wants more specific details I will be happy to answer any questions.

Day 1

Land in KEF and take Flybus to the BSI terminal in Reykjavik, from here we had about an hour and half to do a quick self guided walking tour of downtown Reykjavik, we saw Hallgrimskirkja, Harpa and Solfar. We had arranged to meet our affordable Campers pick up back at the BSI, where the Flybus had dropped us, this allowed us to store our luggage in a locker (about $14 Cdn for 2 hours) while we did the quick walk into Reykjavik. We got picked up and taken to our rental at Affordable Campers, then went to the Bonus grocery store (only 5 mins away) and then hit the road toward the Golden Circle. We did Thingvallier, Gullfoss, Geysir and the Kurid Crater and then went to our campsite in Hvergerdi. Yes, we were quite beat, especially considering that we had an overnight flight, and considering the time change, I think it was about 8:30-9:00pm (this ended up being a pretty typical check in time for us during our trip).

Day 2

Driving Hvergerdi to Vik, along the way:

Lava Tube tour

Hot River Hike

Lava Centre

Camp in Vik

Note about Vik, there is a large store there, and it was probably one of the best spots to pick up souvenirs at when travelling around the ring road.

Day 3

Driving Vik to Hofn, along the way:

We backtracked about 10 mins to see the basalt columns at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

Svartifoss

Jourkulsaron Iceberg Glacier Lagoon Zoidac tour and diamond beach.

Camp in Hofn

Day 4

Drive Hofn to Bakkafjourdor

Drive to Bakkafjourdur (you drive over a large ridge to get there, one hell of a view from the top) Also don't forget to hit up the vending machine in the middle of nowhere enroute to Bakkafjourdour.

WW2 museum in Reydarfjordur

Puffins! at the harbor in Bakkafjourdur...this was pretty amazing you can get within a few feet of the puffins!

Camp in Bakkafjordur

Day 5

Drive Bakkafjordur to Myvatn

We hit many of the Myvatn sites: such as Dimmuborgir Lava Formations, Hverfjall Crater, Skutustadir Pseudocraters (good biriding here if you are interested).

Camp in Reykihilo

*A long driving day, (not helped by the wrong turn we took which we only noticed after about 30 minutes, so it added on hour) about 6 hours of driving including our wrong turn.

Day 6

We hit the two Myvatn sites we didn't have time for yesterday: Namafjall Geothermal Area and the Viti Crater (check out the shower out in the open in the middle of nowhere on your way to the crater!)

Our goal was to drive toward Reykjavik and get fairly close, we weren't sure how far we would get, but we wanted to be close, 45 mins or less away because we had to return our camper at 9:00am)

Godafoss (probably our favourite waterfall...the water is very blue)

Stop in Aykurei . We hit the mall in Akyeuri for some souviners.

Pylsur! (was decent)

Glaumbaer farmstead

Camped in Mosskoger (about 20 mins from Reykjavik) we actually got the very last campsite available here.

*This was another long driving day, about 7 hours*

Day 7

Drove into Reykjavik, dropped off Camper, they drove us to BSI terminal

Flybus to Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon to KEF to home

We drove almost 2000 KM during our trip, and much of the drive has incredible scenery. I was a bit worried about driving the fjords on the east coast, with steep cliffs and death being inches away, but it really wasn't like that. There were some spots like that but it was fine overall. I felt 6 days was decent amount of time, we did want to try to squeeze in The Westman islands, but we had to drop them from our plan, and there was one other campground we would have liked to stay at suggested to us by friends in the north, but the location didn't quite work out for us due to timing. If I could change one thing, it would certainty be the Blue Lagoon, and spend the last day in Reykjavik, or extend our time on the ring road.

Major Costs:

Camper: 944 EUR including the full insurance package we opted for which was 180 EUR

Food (Grocery store): about 15,000 KR plus a few restaurant meals and coffees which are not included in this amount. Coffees were about 300 KR each.

Gas: $240 Cdn this was fairly reasonable, our camper was quite fuel efficient

Lava Tube tour: $157 Cdn

Jokulsarlon Iceberg lagoon: $431 Cdn very expensive but I would still highly recommend it.

Campgrounds: About 15000 KR total for 5 nights

Other tips:

Alcohol - buy at the airport, it is much cheaper. Also the stores are a bit hard to find that sell the stuff.

I suggest not trying to adapt to the time in Iceland, if you are coming from North America. Just get up later and stay up later, lots of good light well into the night (actually it never got dark!) in the summer.

Cash- We did pull out about 8000KR about $80 Cdn at the airport on arrival, and we actually needed every penny of it. There were 2 campgrounds that only took cash, and paid for a few smaller purchases with cash, but credit cards were widely accepted at most places.

Hopefully this will provide some insight to anyone planning a trip, I will be happy to answer any questions.

Morning Briefing (9/4/2019)

A friend of mine, we work together, is going to get married, in Delhi, next February. With this a small group, 4 persons is going there for the marriage and we will take advantage to go to India. It will be the first time for everyone of us.

So we are planning to do a Golden Triangle tour - Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, for 7 days (6 nights), before going to the wedding (3 days 3 nights) and then head south to Goa, for a week.

Now, I'm having some hard time planning this. I was looking for a tour, because it could take us to all the major points, and helpfully having a nice guide will give cultural and historical inputs that we want. I got some few quotations from different tour operators and narrowed my search to 3 - Creative India Tours - https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g297683-d12310857-Reviews-Creative_India_Holidays-Agra_Agra_District_Uttar_Pradesh.html

Agra day tour packages - https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g304551-d5789057-Reviews-Agra_Day_Tour_Packages-New_Delhi_National_Capital_Territory_of_Delhi.html

Indian Holidays pvt - https://www.indianholiday.com/

The first one has a slightly better price, about 365 USD per person, but it has the least reviews and lately it got a very poor review, saying they were taken to restaurants with much more expensive food, taken to a lot of shops they didn't want, etc.

The other 2 cost about 390USD per person, the Indian Holidays Pvt. although being a big company, they don't have a trip advisor reviews page, so I don't know if I can rely on the reviews on their website.

Agra day tour packages seems the best pick, with over 1500 reviews on trip advisor and just 14 with 3 stars or less. Still there are some people saying they were taken to shops they didn't want while missing some of the sightseeing. Yet these guys belong to IATO, that seems to be a government recognition of Tour operators in India. So it seems more reliable than the others.

I'd like some input here, what to do to not lose time in stupid shops, not lose money with inflated prices and mostly to not lose important places for things we don't want to do (and are not in the places to visit in the quotation given). We would like however to shop, for some clothes in the first day, since we don't have the clothing to attend the marriage. Where would it be good to buy some clothes (for a decent price, nothing super expensive), again, without being ripped off.

On the second part of the trip going to Goa, we are thinking of staying in Candolim, to enjoy the beach and some bars. We would still like to go to south Goa to see the historical and cultural places too and to Dudhsagar waterfalls. The waterfalls probably we could get a full day taxi, just drop us there, we would do some hiking, it would be nice. For the sightseeing we could also book a tour, but I think the costs I got (250 USD), for essentially 2 days sightseeing and take us from the airport to the hotel and back to the airport is expensive. Can we just get a taxi maybe to show us around or maybe locally some guide?

Also for our stay we would like to rent some motor bikes, is there any website for it? That we could do and is trustworthy?

Thanks
